I am building a custom home and am picking out all the features I want for it. I was at a friends party once and saw the house at circular holes at various parts of the floor that were used for heating/cooling. They provided a more uniform temperature as oppose to the standard rectangular register vents. Where can I find these circular holes? And what is this type of system called? Thanks in advance for the help.

Is it cheaper to maintain one level of temperature in the home (about 75 degrees F in the summer with central air, and about the same temp in the winter with gas heat) or to adjust the thermostat through out the day?

My home is a vaulted 2 story townhome. The second floor is open to the first, in other words I can look down from the second floor and see the entire first floor. The air flow is strongest to the upper floor. I am not sure how to set the vents for the most economical use of my heating and cooling energy. I have looked and there are no dampers in the system and I would prefer not to have to install any if I can avoid it. What is the best way to set the vents in the rooms to make the most economical use of my heating/cooling system?

The bill for heating and cooling for the house is like $400. it is crazy- are there good, cheaper, reliable alternatives?

I've got a Ruud heating/cooling system with a heat-pump in my home. I want to install a modern digital, programmable thermostat. The dealer has some, not really what I want, at an outrageous price and will offer no advice. Lowe's and Home Depot have a wall full of them at good prices but nobody to tell me which ones will work and which ones will not. Any advice?

Finally! After about one million times of telling my grandchildren to CLOSE the basement door (which is off from the kitchen), they are 'catching on'. Hooray! Now. . . . my question is this: Since the basement is NOT heated, and our home of course IS heated, during the winter time, just how much heat is lost when the basement door is left open (for example) an hour. I know that 'warm air' rises, and 'cool air' sinks. Could the warm air in our home somehow escape down through the basement, and the cold air somehow come up through the door? I know that this question is an oxymoron, but I got to thinking about all the times I told my grandchildren to "Please close the door". Was that all in vain? Would it make any difference in heating expense if the door was left open?

I have added a duct to a remote room which previously had no heating or cooling. It seems to have very low air flow.

I am thinking of buying a house. The only thing holding me back is the heating source. The house has forced air from gas. How much would it cost to install a central heating/cooling system into a 2,300 SqFt home?

There is no heating/cooling vents down but there is ventilation running through the joists with floor vents to the main floor off them, can I cut into those and put registers in the ceiling off those or do I have to run new ventilation for the basement?
